Description

This session shares the process for the co-development of a now publicly available (in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese) heat risk education curriculum for San Diego County peer-trainers as well as the evaluation outcomes of its use in educating local communities. The six-module curriculum, facilitation guide, and learner handouts cover the topics of: (1) heat waves in San Diego County, (2) heat illness identification and treatment, (3) at-risk groups, (4) heat illness prevention, (5) taking action at the community level, and (6) heat risk communication challenges and strategies. Presenters will also share different sections of the curriculum content to illustrate why its development required the involvement of a diverse partnership including researchers, County of San Diego, National Weather Service, and five local community-serving organizations. Audiences will be shown how they can access the curriculum materials and receive instructional help for its use in their own communities.
