Description

This session explores the widespread issue of ageism and its impact on individuals, organizations, and communities. Too often overlooked, ageism limits opportunity, belonging, and engagement across all age groups. Its influence is becoming increasingly urgent as institutions and communities prepare for a demographic shift toward an aging population.

An Age-Friendly Ecosystem offers a collaborative approach that brings together education, healthcare, government, business, and community organizations to create inclusive environments where people of all ages can thrive. By breaking down barriers and fostering engagement across the lifespan, these ecosystems strengthen both communities and institutions. Within this larger framework, the Age-Friendly University (AFU) provides practical tools for inclusivity and lifelong learning,
helping campuses adapt to evolving demographics and respond to challenges such as the impending “enrollment cliff.” Participants will see this model in action through interactive discussions, case studies, and examples from across the country.

This session is designed for professionals, students, and community members who want to promote equity, inclusivity, and lifelong engagement. Outcomes include greater awareness of ageism, strategies for building Age-Friendly Ecosystems, and an understanding of the AFU framework as a pathway to innovation, community well-being, and long-term sustainability.
