Description

Language is not just a tool for communication but a powerful medium that reflects and shapes the ability for people to be equitably seen, respected, valued, and protected. It can open doors to belonging or close them. Spoken or written, internal or external, our choice of language reveals our identity and intent both consciously and unconsciously, setting the tone for fair interactions and ultimately directs the culture of our workplaces, teams, and events. Beyond merely avoiding offensive terms, let’s engage in the complex work of understanding why people say the things they do and how we can create more contagious spaces through inclusive everyday language. Challenging ourselves, our teams, and our partners to be thoughtfully self aware and deliberately intentional when communicating, we’ll learn to deviate from harmful norms or habits that don’t reflect our values, and start talking the walk in ways that center the humanity of everyone.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

During this interactive, fun, capacity-building session, learners begin to:

Understand how language opens or closes possibilities for belonging.
Apply principles of inclusive language to everyday communications.
Be bias-aware in personal and interpersonal narratives.
Use language intentionally and responsibly as building blocks for culture.
