Evolving communication requires awareness, understanding, and skill, much like other areas of diversity competencies. Language provides a means for interaction among and between individuals and groups. The importance of language is even more critical when navigating sensitive topics, including those involving race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and gender identity. Inclusive language gives a more accurate view of the natural world by reflecting social diversity rather than perpetuating stereotypes. It avoids making false assumptions about (or stereotyping) people based on age, cultural background, disability, gender, Indigenous background or sexual orientation, and gender identity.
