Mihailo (Mike) Temali is the CEO of Build from Within Alliance, a national alliance of 20 community organizations from Miami to Anchorage utilizing a comprehensive 4-pillar approach to working with low-income entrepreneurs in low-income communities of color. BfWA provides materials, training, networking and product innovation to help its members adapt this high-touch, risk-tolerant model of place-based entrepreneur training, lending, technical assistance and affordable neighborhood spaces.
This method of “building neighborhood economies from within” began with Neighborhood Development Center (NDC) in Minneapolis and St. Paul, which he founded and led from 1993 to 2019. NDC has trained 5000 low-income entrepreneurs in its 11-week neighborhood-based courses (90% owners of color). It is a CDFI, SBA and Reba-Free business lender, and owner, developer and manager of six neighborhood business incubators.
Temali led a commercial corridor revitalization CDC on St. Paul’s Rice Street from 1984 – 1990, authored “The Community Economic Development Handbook” in 2002 and was a Bush Fellow in Boston and Santiago, Chile.
