Description

This session will explore the achievements and lessons learned from the research collaboration between San Diego State University and the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency as part of the Live Well Center for Innovation & Leadership partnership. This collaboration was established to foster meaningful, long-term engagement between academic researchers and county practitioners, with the goal of improving data sharing, co-publication, and community-centered research that impacts local policy and improves health outcomes in the region. One of the biggest lessons learned is that academic and government institutions often operate under different research processes, timelines, and priorities. These differences have underscored the importance of continued collaboration to streamline data access, align efforts, and co-produce actionable research. In addition, by leveraging existing structures and activities, the partners are catalyzing integration and connection through research events such as Measuring What Matters and the Epi Exchange establishing a virtual connection hub to facilitate active engagement, and sustaining co-led opportunities focused on health equity, knowledge sharing, and policy. Finally, with a signed Memorandum of Agreement in place, the partners seek to further facilitate data sharing and increase co-publication. With several joint research projects already underway, the partnership stands as a model of how institutions can collaborate with one another to advance equity-focused, data-informed public health action. This session will share practical strategies and takeaways for others looking to build or enhance similar academic-practice partnerships. Looking ahead, this partnership aspires to transform how research informs policy and practice. By breaking down institutional silos and building trust around data sharing, the partnership is helping shape research that directly influences public health policies–ensuring community needs are not only studied but truly addressed through action.

Learning Objectives

1. Demonstrate how the research partnership has enhanced research alignment, data sharing, and cross-promotion of activities occurring in both organizations.

2. Identify best practices in bridging research among academia and practice.

3. Exploring strategies that foster effective data integration and co-publication.
