This session will discuss the School Based Intervention for Substance Use and Overdose Prevention document produced by a workgroup of San Diego leaders including the San Diego County Office of Education, San Diego District Attorney's Office, San Diego Imperial County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), The California National Guard, and San Diego County's Substance Use and Overdose Prevention Taskforce. The session will discuss the process the committee used to identify research validated curriculum and other programs that are effective in reducing substance use and preventing overdose among teens.

The session will also outline the various research validated curriculum and programs available to schools in order to establish a comprehensive approach to substance use prevention, education, and intervention. Finally, the session will discuss the various resources available to schools to assist them in implementing research validated curriculum and programs in classrooms and after school settings.

This session is designed for school administrators, counselors, social workers, nurses, teachers, and others that have an interest in implementing prevention and education in schools. Participants will leave with an understanding of the curriculum and programs that are effective in school based prevention and intervention and the resources available to schools to assist in the implementation of the identified curriculum and programs.

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will learn about the prevention science behind identifying effective school based prevention curriculum and programs.

2. Participants will learn about specific curriculum and programs that are effective in reducing substance mis-use and preventing overdose among teens.

3. Participants will learn about the various resources that are available to them to assist in the implementation of effective curriculum and programs in schools.
