Speaker Bio
Matt Wechter is the Supervising Attorney for the Pretrial Advocacy and Community Connections Team at the San Diego Public Defender. This new team has been formed to address client needs early and often after arrest, and while the case is pending through in-custody counseling and advocacy for release, and community partnerships to assist with stability after release. Matt is a member of the Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defense and an advisor to the Commission on Homelessness and Poverty for the American Bar Association, and a member of Regional Taskforce on Homelessness Continuum of Care Advisory Group, and County of San Diego Alternatives to Incarceration Workgroup. Lastly, Matt administers the San Diego Homeless Court Program - a national recognition model court that resolves/dismisses low level cases for those that participate in community programs to address the root causes of their justice-involvement. In these roles, Matt acts as a liaison between the Public Defender, Superior Court operations, District Attorney, and City Attorney, Probation, and other agencies to develop large-scale, collaborative systems to handle the large numbers of cases. At heart, Matt is an efficiency and technology junkie – leveraging high-tech solutions where appropriate – to support productivity with tight resources, and to serve as many clients as possible for success.
