Engage with leaders in San Diego's housing solutions arena, where they tackle the ongoing housing crisis with diverse approaches, from housing homeless veterans to addressing "missing middle" rental housing and homeownership challenges, as well as long-term policy solutions. Shared housing emerges as a viable option for individuals at risk of homelessness, despite the stigma it sometimes carries. Recovery Residences (RR) and Independent Living Homes (ILH) fall under this model, offering housing for adults and families in various stages of recovery or transition, often from addiction, mental health challenges, or incarceration. The Recovery Residence Association (RRA) and Independent Living Association (ILA) were established as community-driven initiatives to support shared housing operators in San Diego County through education, advocacy, and skill development. The workshop will delve into their impact, including quality standards, challenges, and successes, highlighting the need for dignified, respectful shared housing models nationwide.
Learning Objective:
1. Recognize the Recommended Quality Standards to support positive shared housing experiences and how to reduce the stigma associated with it
2. Learn about several promising housing initiatives that are being implemented in San Diego
