The Pedal Ahead charity, and program, were created to enhance socio-economic opportunities among low-income communities (earning $49,000 and below) by providing loan-to-own electric bicycles, and enhancing quality of life through active transportation.
Bike commuting and exercise is an excellent way to increase levels of health and wellness benefits. In the U.S., only about half of adults meet aerobic exercise guidelines, but when done regularly, 30 minutes of e-bike riding at a casual pace is enough to meet these basic recommendations.
Our organization's goal is to transform lives through e-bike transportation while creating new communities and stimulating mental, physical, and environmental health. Since the program's launch in September 2020, we have distributed 400 e-bikes. We've seen an impact in miles ridden (over 300,000), calories burned (over 6 million), and greenhouse gas reduction (257,930kg – the equivalent of 6,000 trees planted).
By subsidizing e-bikes in low-income communities, Pedal Ahead has given participants an opportunity to share their experiences with neighbors, friends, and family members. This sets an example of what is possible through equitable programs and outreach.
